Progress and values don't conflict with each other at all. This is a huge misconception.
What happens is old belief systems that evolved out of eras with different conditions begin failing, and instead of adapting and evolving to new conditions, they rigidly hold on and try to blame their failure on other things, to cover up those failures.
This is why every major religion in the developed world is radically different than it was a few hundred years ago, and why every party with significant power is radically different, etc.
