How long should parents support their adult children?

After 14 years of neglect and brutal abuse, I hit my stepfather. I was so badly beaten the school could no longer turn a blind eye and I was removed from my birth mother and stepfather. I broke my first two foster homes, through no fault of theirs. I was not abused in any way in either home. I spent a short time in Protective Custody at the County Juvenile Hall before being placed with my third set of foster parents 300 miles from home. Protective Custody did not go well for me.
