You have a feeling you are trying to fix with a delay. Name that, and the rest of the page is a field guide: what the repair is, how it shows up at a desk, and the miss that keeps you redesigning Sundays.

1. What mood-repair is

In 2013, Fuschia Sirois (Bishop’s / Sheffield) and Timothy Pychyl (Carleton) named the job hiding under the undone task. Procrastination, in their review, is short-term mood repair. The work stirs something you do not want to feel. Boredom. Anxiety. A hunch you will do it badly. Quiet resentment that the task exists at all. Delay drops that feeling in the next few seconds. The relief is immediate, and it trains the next delay.

Their paper is a theoretical review, not a new trial. Read it as a map of the trade, not a new lab. The delay looks like a scheduling choice. It is buying a better mood.

That purchase has a receipt. Present-you gets the cleaner minute. Future-you gets the same task plus the extra heat of having waited. Sirois and Pychyl are blunt about who pays: the future self carries a repair that only worked for a moment. You are invoicing a later you who still has to open the file, still has to feel the pinch, and now has less runway.

The repair is not laziness and it is not a mystery personality. It is a priority swap. The aversive feeling is treated as the problem that must be solved first. The intended action is treated as optional until the mood cooperates. Mood never fully cooperates, so the swap repeats. That is why a clean Sunday plan still dies at 9:12 on Monday. The plan was built for a person who already felt fine. The flinch arrives for a person who does not.

The delay is doing a job: make now feel less bad. Until you give that job a different tool, delay keeps winning the bid.

2. How it shows up

Watch the next ten seconds after the pinch, not the story you tell at 4 p.m. The body does a small no. Shoulders. Jaw. A sudden interest in a mug, a tab, a chat that was not urgent thirty seconds ago. You are still “working.” You are just no longer in contact with the thing that pinched.

The lab under that move is cleaner than a slogan. In three studies at Case Western Reserve, Dianne Tice, Ellen Bratslavsky, and Roy Baumeister put people in a bad mood and watched what they reached for. Snacks. Quick gratification. Frivolous delay. The pattern vanished when people believed the mood was frozen, unchangeable. If you cannot fix the feeling, you stop buying the fix. Delay, in that room, was a bid to feel better now.

That is the tell at your desk. If the mood still looks negotiable, you will negotiate with anything that is not the file: a re-read of the brief, a new folder, a “quick” check that turns into twenty minutes. None of those moves are random. They are mood tools with better branding than delay. They keep your hands busy so the pinch can drop without you having to write the ugly first sentence.

The social heat rides along for free. While you buy the cleaner now, the person waiting on the email updates their file on you. You look flaky. Status is not a separate problem from mood-repair. It is what the repair costs in the room where other people keep score. You get a quieter chest for an hour. They get a story about whether you can be counted on. That story sticks longer than the relief.

You catch it in the micro-switch: cursor still blinking, body already gone. Ready is what you are trying to buy. The task is what you put on the card.

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

3. The common miss

Common miss
A better calendar never meets the flinch. The flinch is the whole game.

People treat the undone task as a planning error. Color-code it. Move it. Give it a prettier block. The pinch does not live in the block. It lives in the first contact with the work: the subject line, the blank page, the number you do not want to look at. A calendar can hold a promise. It cannot intercept a feeling.

The miss has a second face: waiting to want it. Wanting is a mood. If Sirois and Pychyl are right, the delay is already a mood strategy. Waiting for a better mood is just the same strategy with nicer lighting. Future-you is not a more virtuous person. Future-you is you, later, with the same pinch and a worse clock.

The miss has a third face: making the first move large enough to renegotiate. “Finish the deck.” “Clear the inbox.” Those thens are speeches. Speeches lose to a tab. The then has to be smaller than the pinch or it gets bargained to nothing.

Stop feeding the miss. Aim one if-then at the second the body tries to stand up. If the pinch, then contact: open the file, type the first ugly sentence. The feeling can stay. The purchase cannot.

If-then at the flinch

Mood-repair names the job. The if-then is how you refuse to pay in delay. Write it before you sit down. The person in the pinch will not invent a good plan. They will invent a mug.

USE IT
Write one line before you sit down. When I feel the urge to switch away from this task, I will open the file and do the first ugly sentence. Then stop designing the plan. The if is the flinch. The then is a first move so small that future-you cannot renegotiate it.

Do not wait for the mood to clear. Do not explain the delay to the person you will look flaky to. Open the thing that pinched. One ugly sentence is enough to break the bid. The rest of the hour can be ordinary.

What is the task you have been mood-repairing? Reply with the if-then you wrote.

— Wes
